Maskee by Ciro: launched in 1923.

Parfums Ciro was founded in 1921 in New York, at first obtaining all its fragrances from Gabilla in Paris, already bottled. These included 'Doux Jasmin', 'Chevalier de la Nuit' and 'Maskee', all issued in 1923.
Fragrance Composition:

So what does it smell like? It is classified as a floral fragrance for women, but I have no published notes on this composition, I need a sample to tell you what it smells like. The newspaper ads described it as "perfume of the carnival, a gay, reckless odeur".

Bottles:

Parfum Maskee was housed in a clear glass bottle in the shape of a clown. The milk glass stopper is ball shaped with a pointed hat which has been enameled in black. Paper labels represented the ruff collar around the clown's neck and three buttons down the front of the "suit". The bottle was available in two sizes: 5" and 8" tall. The bottle was presented in a black satin box with a stenciled clown in white.

In advertisements from 1924, the 2 oz bottle retailed for $5 and the 1 oz bottle sold for $2.50.

From the website:

"The play of the masks ... a glittering celebration, joie de vivre and exuberance characterize the atmosphere, which is characterized by the colourfulness and eccentricity of the costumes. The roving gaze captures faces, faces alien and familiar alike, thanks to the magic of their disguise. He indulges in the splendor of the hidden, the pleasure finds in the dance around the question of identities, leaving unfulfilled curiosity behind ...

MASKÉE is a seductress whose sensuality derives from her versatility: Exotic nectar sweetness of ylang blossoms meets precious, scarlet-velvety damask roses, powdery-majestic irises on beguiling jasmine of appealing creaminess. Heliotrope conjures echoes of marzipan, while delicious bourbon vanilla in combination with tonka bean provides vanilla-sweet moments. The base is made of soft musk and clean cedar, gently carrying the fragrance, which sees itself coquettishly ensnared by honey."

Fragrance Composition:

So what does it smell like? It was an aldehydic woody floral fragrance for women. It begins with a sparkling aldehydic and citrus top, followed by a spicy floral heart of rose and jasmine, resting on a classic chypre base punctuated with warm woods and ambergris.

Top notes: aldehydes, bergamot

Middle notes: rose, spices and jasmine

Base notes: labdanum, musk, sandalwood, cedar, amber, patchouli and oakmoss

A gay, sparkling scent of woods and amber —Oh La La by Ciro (perfume, 1 oz., $22.50)

Harper's Bazaar, 1959:

"Oh la la, Ciro's provocative new adventure in perfume, captures with admirable artistry everyone's most unashamedly romantic dream of Paris. Rose and jasmine components, barely haunted by spice, are at the heart of this scent — which is both sparkling and sultry, a pleasant paradox in perfume."

LIFE, 1961:

"Give it — and she'll say, "Oh La La." It's Paris in a perfume — too wonderful for words! . . . Created in France by Ciro, acclaimed around the world. 2 ounces $40, one ounce $22.50, half ounce $12.50. Also available, domestically blended: Eau de Parfum, Perfume Mist, Mist Concentre, Bath Powder, $3.00 to $5.00. And to capture, captivate every woman — try these other famed Ciro Fragrances: reflexions®— gay, elegant, always remembered, $16 and $8 danger®— definitely not for the timid, $17.50, $10, and $7."

Less commonly found are the hourglass shaped bottles. The parfum flacon has a ground glass stopper in the shape of a fan. Eau de Cologne and Bath Oil (Esscent) was available in a modified form of the parfum flacon but fitted with a screw cap.
Other bottles were also used.
So what does it smell like? It is classified as a white floral oriental fragrance for women and was described as a light magnolia scent perfect for warmer weather. I used various samples of the parfum to create a scent profile:

Top notes: citrus, spices, lily of the valley, neroli, honeysuckle and violet

Middle notes: jasmine, tuberose, magnolia, carnation, iris, orange blossom, carnation, rose, heliotrope

Base notes: vetiver, vanilla, ambergris, orris, frankincense, sandalwood, tonka bean, labdanum, oakmoss, balsam.

Surrender was originally launched in a clear crystal faceted diamond shaped bottle, made by Baccarat. It was housed in a velvet, hinged presentation box that had a small mirror that sat behind the bottle, reinforcing the brilliant refraction of the faceted glass bottle. Other less expensive editions were produced by other companies and were contained in different bottles and packaging.
From the website:

"Language creates worlds. She moves, touches, changes, takes away stories and history. Their god is Ptah, the ancient Egyptian god, the father of the gods from whom all life proceeds. Like the spiritual creation of a novel that takes us into strange spheres, the power of words has remained. And our language to this day is the beginning of all becoming, of all being.

PTAH pays homage to the imagination that breaks down in the power of the word orbit - and is dedicated to those subtle esthete who passionately indulge in the temptations of independent thought.

The citrusy freshness of bergamot in a duet cools the lively spirit with the herb-woody fruitiness of the ginger, which, accompanied by herbaceous sage, forms the top note. This leads over to a smoky-powdery heart: Iris and incense, accompanied by dark green luminous geranium, which breathes the delicate echoes of Rose. The contrast between creamy vanilla spiced up by Tonka and masculine leather creates ambivalence that is skillfully enhanced by the salty-grassy smokiness of the vetiver."

Top notes: Calabrian bergamot, sage, ginger, elemi-resin

Middle notes: frankincense, geranium, iris

Base notes: vetiver, tonka bean, bourbon vanilla, leather

Hearst's International Combined with Cosmopolitan, Volume 87, 1929:

"GARDENIA SAUVAGE. Paris originates — a new charm...A charm which even Fashion, dominant arbiter that she is, can never out-mode. It is more alluring than youth; more enticing than chic; more intriguing than wit. It is the charm that brings remembrance! Gardenia Sauvage engraves the image of its wearer on the minds of those she meets - and those she loves. Gardenia Sauvage speaks to the heart and woos Remembrance. It is Ciro’s newest perfume, a revelation even to those who know and love the gardenia. For it embodies the poignancy and elusive power of the wild flower itself. It's a scent that lingers on, forever whispering its message - "Remember Me!" "

Harper's Bazaar - Volume 71, Part 2, 1937:

Gardenia Sauvage was housed in a modernistic Art Deco columnar bottle which I like to call the "Skyscraper', with clean lines and a frosted glass stopper (the very top was enameled in green). Bottle was available in two sizes: 2 7/8" tall (20ml) and 3.75" tall (2 oz). The bottle was designed by Guy T. Gibson in 1928.

Le Chevalier de la Nuit (Knight of the Night) was launched in France in 1923 by Parfums Ciro. It was introduced to America in 1924 according to some newspaper articles of the day.

Though there are no published notes on this composition, I did have some old empty bottles years ago, and I distinctly remember them smelling like the heady, narcotic floral notes of jasmine, gardenia and tuberose.

In old advertisements, the perfume was described as "an exotic, fascinating fragrance whose romantic overtones are beautifully expressed by its name, a lasting perfume, and particularly adaptable to furs. It has a singular sweetness, not found in most heavy odors, and while it is a mysterious, intriguing and essentially a formal perfume, it may be worn at any time of day."

Top notes: bergamot, orange blossom

Middle notes: tuberose, gardenia, jasmine, rose

Base notes: musk, ambergris, sandalwood, vanilla, oakmoss, tonka, benzoin

The bottle carries out the cavalier theme, in the shape of a suit of armor, a heart in its center, with its stopper a visored, plumed helmet. It's unusual bottle made it particularly appropriate for Christmas gift giving. The bottles came in black opaque glass, clear and frosted glass and also clear and frosted glass with gilded highlights. Designed by Guy T.Gibson, the bottle was patented on Nov. 17, 1925.
An Eau de Toilette bottle, in clear and frosted glass, was slightly different from the parfum flacon, and it had a shield shaped label, this bottle stood around 7 1/4" tall.

I wanted to make mention that in 1934, Edward G. Westlake, working on behalf of Marshall Field, "invented" this exact same bottle as seen in this patent drawing. This bottle was made in Czechoslovakia and sold by Marshall Field using their Aristo subsidiary, also known as McCoy, Jones and Westlake. These Czech copies of the bottle are not marked "France" on the base.
Starting in 1931, a small cylindrical, clear glass bottle was also used, it had a small boule stopper made of clear glass and a tiny rectangular label. This bottle held 1 oz of parfum, stood 9cm tall, and was also used for other Ciro perfumes.

"CIRO'S exquisite perfume odors, Doux Jasmin, Chevalier de la Nuit, Gardenia Sauvage, as well as an eau de cologne, have been developed in toilet waters known as "Eau de Ciro". The cone shaped bottle decorated with a silver top and label forms an attractive addition to bath shelf and dressing table."

In 1938, these Eau de Ciro toilet waters were being presented in eight sided glass bottles with screw caps and a long rectangular label down the front of the bottle. Available in Surrender, Danger, Reflexions, Gardenia Sauvage and Doux Jasmin. The Eau de Ciro was also available in a matching atomizer bottle.
It's exportation to the USA appears to have been halted in 1936 and was unavailable during World War II, it was brought back as late as 1948, as it was advertised as "a recent arrival from Paris" and "Ciro's dashing perfume Chevalier de la Nuit, just returned in its elegant black bottle to make Christmas and linger with her all year long" according to two newspaper articles. I can not find any other newspaper reference to it after 1950. Ciro stopped making perfumes in 1961.

Cue, 1948:

"The return of one of France's favorite perfumes, Chevalier de la Nuit, is heralded for the Christmas season. This is, of course, the famous Ciro scent whose bottle is a suit of armor and its stopper a visor with a plumed helmet. This will be available for your Christmas favorite in one ounce bottles, only at $15."

The perfume was still being sold in 1950. Ciro stopped making perfumes in 1961.
In 2018, I was notified that Parfums Ciro had been resurrected and their website www.ciroparfums.com now offers fragrances based on their originals. One such perfume is the once popular Chevalier de la Nuit, recreated by Alexander Streeck.

"The night breaks in, everything plunges into its deep darkness. Sounds velvety and inky blue. And thus creates the ideal stage for those who have committed to it. They swarm, in search of adventure or diversion, after experience and pleasure. Shimmering their silhouettes stand out from the darkness as they stroll seemingly aimlessly through the streets. Knights of the big city and conquerors - they own them, the night with its endless possibilities.

CHEVALIER DE LA NUIT is dedicated to those who are guided by their passion.

The fire kindles CHEVALIER DE LA NUIT with racy clove, which makes up the distinctive heart of the fragrance. Spicy, it shows as well as a spirited sharpness, which is inspired by eucalyptus freshness. Their powdery facets are emphasized by iris and dark patchouli and finely smoky finished by vetiver. Hesperia fruits provide a dynamic, citrusy echo, while exquisite sandalwood adds balsamic, along with delicious bourbon vanilla, sweetly savoring the perfume."
